This aromatic bulb has spread across the world and is now a staple ingredient in numerous cuisines. Garlic is renowned for its robust flavour and health benefits, including boosting the immune system and aiding digestion. Varieties

Garlic is available in various forms:

  • Garlic powder: A fine, dried version that is quick and easy to use in a range of dishes.
  • Garlic granules: Coarser than powder, perfect for adding a subtle crunch and extra texture to dishes like stews and marinades.
  • Minced garlic: Freshly chopped for intense flavour, ideal for stir-fries, sauces, and dressings.
  • Garlic puree: A smooth variant that is easy to use in dips or as a base for sauces.
Applications

Garlic is incredibly versatile and enhances the depth and aroma of a wide array of dishes. Garlic powder and granules are great for quickly seasoning marinades and spice blends. Chopped garlic offers a powerful punch, perfect for stir-fries, while garlic puree adds a soft, creamy flavour to soups and sauces. Garlic is also often used in traditional medicine for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Production

Garlic cultivation requires well-drained soil, plenty of sunlight, and a temperate climate. Garlic bulbs are typically planted in the fall and harvested in the summer when the leaves begin to wither. The bulbs are then dried to extend their shelf life. Variations in cultivation methods and garlic varieties influence the taste and potency of the final products.

Annual Harvest

In most growing regions, such as China, the United States, and Spain, garlic is typically harvested once per year. In some areas, however, a second, smaller harvest may occur, depending on cultivation conditions. This impacts the availability and price of garlic in the market.
